
Dr. Tushar Singh
Dear Members of the ICP Community,
Dr. Tushar Singh is Professor of Psychology at Banaras Hindu University, India, and President of the National Academy of Psychology (NAOP), India. He earned his D.Phil. in Psychology from the University of Allahabad, India and has since held significant academic and leadership positions, including Research Director at the Centre for Behavioural and Cognitive Sciences, University of Allahabad, and Visiting Professor at the Indian Institute of Management, Indore and Indian Institute of Technology (BHU). Since 2018, he has also served as a Member of the Board of Directors of the International Association of Applied Psychology (IAAP).
Dr. Singh’s research is distinguished by its focus on advocating for the rights and well-being of marginalized and disadvantaged groups. His work has highlighted the psychosocial challenges faced by LGBTQ+ communities, abused women and children, survivors of acid attacks, and India’s Hijra community. He has published widely in leading international and national journals, with influential studies on stigma and health disparities among LGBT populations (Stigma and Health, 2022), domestic violence during the COVID-19 pandemic (Journal of Community & Applied Social Psychology, 2021), and the lived experiences of Indian Hijras (Culture & Psychology, 2023). His cross-national collaborations include research on childhood maltreatment and adolescent mental health (Australian and New Zealand Journal of Psychiatry, 2020) and healing emotional wounds of child labourers in India and Nepal(BJPsych International, 2021).
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Singh’s scholarship contributed to an understanding of psychosocial resilience, adaptation, and mental health disparities. His co-authored book, Exploring the Psycho-Social Impact of COVID-19: Global Perspectives on Behaviour, Interventions and Future Directions (Routledge, 2024), reflects his ability to integrate global perspectives with culturally grounded interventions. His recent chapters in the Handbook of Concepts in Health, Health Behavior and Environmental Health (2025) and Towards Inclusive Societies (2023) further demonstrate his sustained commitment to equity, inclusion, and global mental health.
For his contributions, Dr. Singh has received multiple professional recognitions. He was honored as an “Emerging Psychologist” at the 2012 International Congress of Psychology in Cape Town, South Africa, and received the Young Researcher Travel Award from the International Council of Psychologists in Montreal, Canada, in 2018. He has also been a recipient of the Advanced Research Training Seminar (ARTS) Award by IUPsyS, IAAP, and IACCP.
Dr. Singh has delivered more than three dozen invited and keynote lectures across institutions in India and abroad, and has conducted numerous workshops for students and early career researchers on life skills, research methodology, and applied psychology. He serves on editorial boards of leading journals, including Depression and Anxiety, Health & Social Care in the Community, Frontiers in Psychology, and Psychological Studies, reflecting his dedication to advancing psychological science and amplifying diverse voices.
