Sathasivian (Saths) Cooper, PhD has worked tirelessly for social justice causes in South Africa (SA) as well as internationally. As an activist in the anti-Apartheid struggle in SA, he was placed under house arrest in 1973 and then jailed for nine years. He spent 5 of those years in the same cell-block as former SA President Nelson Mandela on Robben Island. He was declared a “victim of gross human rights violations” by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of SA. He served as President of the International Union of Psychological Science, Vice President of the International Social Science Council and President of the Pan-African Psychology Union, is a Fellow of the Psychological Society of South Africa (PsySSA) and the National Academy of Psychology – India, and Honorary Fellow of the British and Irish Psychological Societies. His contributions have touched all spheres of community, cultural, educational, governmental, political and professional life in SA. Dr. Cooper received the inaugural IUPsyS Achievement Against the Odds Award, the International Association of Applied Psychology Award for Distinguished Professional Contributions to the Advancement of Applied Psychology and the APA Award for Distinguished Contributions to the International Advancement of Psychology.
